This article discusses how to update Apple TVs remotely with JAMF.

Works on

  • Apple TVs (with tvOS 12 or later)

Note: Apple TVs on tvOS 11 cannot be remotely updated. Network Managers will need to manually update each Apple TV by navigating to Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software. Once the OS is on tvOS 12 or higher, the Operating System can be updated remotely.

Step 1

Log into Jamf console

  1. From a web browser, navigate to
  2. Log in with your netadmin account’s credentials (usually net admin-LocationNumber). Do not use the full email address.

Create Smart Device Group

  1. From the Jamf dashboard, on the left, click Devices.
  2. On the left, click Smart Device Groups.
  3. At the top-right, click +New.
  4. For the Display Name, use the naming convention LocationNumber-Apple TVs. For example, 9822Apple TVs
  5. Click the Criteria tab.
  6. To the right, click Add.
  7. Click Choose next to the Model criteria.
  8. Change the Operator dropdown to like.
  9. In the Value fieldtype: Apple TV
  10. Click Save.

Add Smart Group to dashboard (optional)

  1. At the top-right of the Smart Group, place a checkmark next to Show in Jamf Pro Dashboard.
  2. At the top-left, click the Jamf logo to go back to your Dashboard.

Step 2

Send Remote Update Command

  1. From the Jamf console, click Devices.
  2. Click Smart Device Groups.
  3. Click the Apple TV Smart Group you created earlier.
  4. At the bottom-right, click View.
  5. At the bottom-right, click Actions.
    1. Note: If you do not see the Actions button, make sure the search box at the top-left is blank.
  6. Select Send Remote Commands.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Select Update OS Versions on supervised devices
  9. Click Next.
  10. Uncheck Update iOS Version (iOS 9 – 10.2, enrolled via a Prestage enrollment; and/or iOS 10.3 or later).
  11. Check Update tvOS Version (tvOS 12 or later).
  12. Click Next.

The command to update the tvOS is now sent. If the Apple TVs are on tvOS 12 or later, they will download the update in the background and then automatically reboot and install.
