Reset an Apple TV

This article discusses how to factory reset an Apple TV for last resort-style troubleshooting.

Step 1

Identify model

To confirm which Apple TV model you are troubleshooting, simply look at the rear connections:

Step 2

How to Reset an Apple TV (4th Generation)

  1. Connect the power cable to the Apple TV.
  2. Connect the USB-A to USB-C cable. (If you do not have this cable, please purchase this one).
  3. Launch Apple Configurator 2 from Macintosh HD > Applications > Apple Configurator 2.
  4. In Configurator, click on the Apple TV icon.
  5. Go to Actions > Restore. The device will restore to the factory default settings and update to the latest compatible tvOS.
  6. After the Apple TV has been restored, follow the New Apple TV Setup article.

How to Reset an Apple TV 4K

Note: There is no Lightning or USB-C cable on the 4k models to connect the device to a computer for Restoring.

  1. Connect the Apple TV 4K to an HDMI monitor.
  2. Connect a hot Ethernet cable.
  3. Connect the power cable to the Apple TV. Allow the Apple TV to fully boot.
  4. Disconnect the power cable from the Apple TV.
  5. Repeat steps 3 through 4 for a total of 3 times.
  6. On the third power cycle, the Apple TV will boot to a Recovery Mode.
  7. Tap Reset All Settings.
    1. Note: You may need to pair the remote by pressing the Menu and Volume + buttons simultaneously until the “Remote Paired” message appears.
  8. After the Apple TV has been restored, follow the New Apple TV Setup article.
